Spokane is a city in Washington state, located in Eastern Washington near in the Idaho border. The city is on the Spokane River and is about 90 miles south of the Canadian border. The population of Spokane is over 200,000 and the whole Spokane Metropolitan area is over 500,000.

Spokane’s first inhabitants were the Spokane Tribe. In Spokane, you will find many references to their culture and impact. For example, if you visit the waterfall downtown, there will be many opportunities to read about the power of the river and how it relates to the Spokane Tribe.
Downtown Spokane is full of beautiful historic architecture. You can see the rich culture and appreciation for the arts in places such as the Historic Davenport hotel or the Fox Theatre. A few intricate cathedrals also grace the streets of downtown; even the courthouse is a building whose architecture should appeal to any old building lovers. Spokane is also home to two universities, Gonzaga and Whitworth, which have both held classes for over 100 years in this fantastic city.
One of the best things about the geographic location of Spokane is the fact that it gets all four seasons. It’s lakes, forests, mountains, and rivers, provide optimal outdoor recreation for all types of athletes and adventurers. It’s home to five major ski resorts, giving avid skiers and snowboarders a fantastic winter playground. The Centennial trail which spans from North Spokane to Idaho is a biker’s dream. And trails upon trails give no end to the exploring that can be done in the many acres of state parks in the region.
Spokane has an overwhelming sense of community, and it can be seen in the many awesome events that are held that have come to define Spokane. Hoopfest, the world’s largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament, brings thousands of visitors to Spokane every summer. The streets of downtown close down willingly to open courts for people of all ages to play on. Bloomsday is another wonderful example of the whole city shutting down to participate in an annual event that in other cities may not have the same positivity and love surrounding it. How often can you get a whole city in on running a race? The people, universities, companies, and events all show the love and understanding that Spokane seems to have for its community.
