Family Friendly Hikes
These hikes have been recommended by many as the best hikes for kids and families in the Spokane area. Some of these hikes have already been featured on Inland Outdoors, however on this page we will emphasize what makes each one of these trails a great option for kids. For more details or trail conditions, select the hike individually.

Bowl & Pitcher:
While already mentioned before on our featured hikes list, it is no wonder that this short loop has ranked high for one of the best hiking options for kids. Not only is the trail short and relatively flat, it features some awesome scenery and an exciting wooden bridge. This 2.0 mile loop hike features many places to get down to the river and put your toes in the water, an exciting appeal for kids and dogs alike. There are also lots of boulders and large rocks for kids to climb on and explore. One of the greatest things about this hike is that it is not too far out of town, so you won’t need to worry too much about impatient car rides on the way in or out. Due to the short distance and the location, Bowl & Pitcher is a great option for a last-minute hike just to get some exercise in. If packing for a day hike with kids stresses you out, definitely consider coming to Bowl & Pitcher.

Painted Rocks Nature Trail:
Another great option for families who are not wanting to spend the whole day out on a hike is the Painted Rocks Nature Trail. This hike was also mentioned before on the hiking page, however this would just be the first part of the trail, not the Knothead Valley Loop. This trail, once again, is relatively short and very flat, perfect for little ones! One of the great things about the nature trail is the fact that it is located in the Little Spokane Nature Area and follows the Little Spokane River. There are a few spots along this trail that you will be right at the bank of the water, which is always fun for everyone involved. Of course, what gives this hike its name is the Indian Painted Rocks, which are featured right at the beginning of the trail. Get the whole family out and take a walk in this awesome area all year round!
Waterfall Loop (Trail 121):
Waterfall Loop is located in Palisades Park east of Spokane. This loop is very short at 1.1 miles, but unique in that it features a waterfall and several stream/creek crossings. The stream may get you wet, so make sure your kids are comfortable with getting a little muddy! While this hike is short, it does feature some switchbacks and a little more elevation than the last two hikes mentioned. If you are looking to extend your day, pull out a map and venture off on some of the cross trails, but make sure you keep track of where you are going. All reviews note that this hike is full of awesome greenery and the waterfall is really something to enjoy! Be on the lookout for some caves near the waterfall!
